Meet Gerry Crisp
A member of the Hart Lib Dems team sat down with Gerry to find out more about what motivated him to become a District Councillor.
Tell us a bit about your background
Back in the 1970s, I spent 7 years as a full-time officer within the Union of Post Office Workers. Having brought my family up in Yateley and with my background and experience of standing up for people, I wanted to do more. As a Liberal Democrat Councillor - on Town and District – I am delighted to be able to bring real changes to the community I love.
Why did you become District Councillor for Yateley West?
It is my honour to represent the local community within Yateley West, especially because they put their faith in my previous term so resolutely - it was humbling that they gave me a record majority in the highest voting turnout in the history of Hart. I love that I have the opportunity to continue to focus on representing my community in Yateley West at Hart for a second term.
Why are you a Liberal Democrat?
It fits with my political philosophy as ‘communitarian’: focussing on building our community in Yateley to be the best that it can be. I also like how Liberal Democrats work all year round for their constituents - not just putting in an appearance at election time!
What are some of the issues you are tackling that affect Yateley West?
I am helping and encouraging Yateley Town Council to support even more initiatives which benefit residents. For example, this year, after a five year delay because of Covid, I’m focusing on the annual Feel Good Festival on the Green on Saturday 21 September. When I was Mayor this was my initiative, designed to replace the Autumn Yateley Carnival which ended in 1993. Yateley is defined by its people - and it's events like this that bring us together and make it a great place to live.
