MP proposes legal changes to speed up the rebuild of Basingstoke Hospital

Alex Brewer MP has tabled an amendment to the Health Bill that would legally require the Government to guarantee construction on Basingstoke Hospital is underway by 2030, and would force the Minister to explain to local residents if that deadline is missed.

The Conservatives promised a new hospital would be built by 2030. That promise has been broken. Construction is now not expected to start until between 2037 and 2039, with the hospital unlikely to open its doors before 2046, despite the land already being secured.

Pressure on the site is mounting. Hampshire Hospitals declared a critical incident in June after high admissions and delayed discharges stretched services, while the cost of maintaining the ageing building keeps climbing.

Ms Brewer has repeatedly pressed ministers on the issue in Parliament, including raising it directly with the Prime Minister at PMQs. She has also launched a petition calling on the Government to move Basingstoke Hospital up the waiting list for rebuilding, and is urging residents to sign it on her website.

Alex Brewer MP said:

“The Conservatives broke their word to our community, and now this Government has kicked the issue into the long grass.”

"The Government must stop pouring money into patching up a failing building and commit to rebuilding Basingstoke Hospital sooner. It makes no sense for patients, staff or taxpayers."
