Joining the party allows you to vote at local party meetings, to choose candidates to stand for election as councillors, and to vote on national Lib Dem Party decisions, such as choosing a new leader. You also need to be a party member to stand for election ... but that is for the future. Many of our members started off as volunteers, and decided to become members later.
As long as you do not currently belong to another political party, you can join. If you later decide to stand for election as a representative of the party then you will need to go through vetting, to ensure that your values align with those held by the party. There is no interview requirement to join as an ordinary member. You do not need to be a UK national. Long term residents in the UK are also welcome.
Most people join as a member starting at just £15 a year. If you are on benefits there is a concessionary rate of 50p per month.
See the Join the Lib Dems page for more details.
